Social Justice Ministry
At Sunset Church, we are concerned about the spiritual as well as physical and emotional well being of others. We strive to live out the Gospel of Jesus Christ in both word and deed. The Social Justice Ministry promotes awareness of and involvement in activities to help those in need.
The following are a few volunteer opportunities in which Sunset members have participated.
Alpha Pregnancy Center
APC is a Christian service organization that assists individuals and families dealing with unplanned pregnancies. They provide many free client services such as pregnancy testing, counseling, and parenting classes. They provide maternity/infant-children's clothing. Clothing/diaper donations are appreciated. Volunteers are needed to staff the office, distribute layette sets to new moms, and provide friendship/mentoring in the mom to mom program. APC is located at 5070 Mission Street, San Francisco. If you are interested in volunteering you can contact the staff at 415-584-6800 or info@alphapc.org. Their website address is alphapc.org. The Sunset Church contact person is Gary Gin.
City Impact
City Impact is a Christian organization whose ministry is focused on serving the needs of people in the Tenderloin. They are committed in sharing the Gospel and serving needs at multiple levels—meal distribution, thrift store, rescue mission, medical clinic, school for K to 8th grade. They are in the process of a major building renovation project at 230 Jones St., SF (off Eddy St.). Their website is cityimpact911.com

City Team
Through God's love, City Team is a Christian ministry planted in the heart of South of Market - seeking to love its neighbors faithfully and without boundaries. City Team has three main areas of outreach including an alcohol recovery program for men, outreach to the local SROs (single resident occupancies), and foot washing / clothes distribution / meal service to the homeless. Volunteers are always needed in all sorts of capacities. There are serving opportunities daily Monday to Friday and Saturday. If you would like more information or are interested in volunteering, see City Team's website at http://cityteam.org/sanfrancisco/ and click on Volunteer >> San Francisco. Also note, if you are looking for someone to volunteer with to check it out, Jeannette is available to partner beside you.
Habitat for Humanity
No prior experience is needed to help build affordable homes for low income residents in San Francisco. There are construction and non-construction opportunities available. You can volunteer as an individual or get a group of friends or colleagues to join you. The sign up process is quite easy via their website, www.habitatsf.org. The Sunset Church contact person is Suzette Lee.
International Justice Mission (IJM)
Sunset has been supportive of IJM which is an internationally recognized Christian human rights agency that has been effective in identifying victims of child trafficking that results in child prostitution and other forms of adult/child slavery and assisting in providing life changing victim aftercare.
IJM supports the Child Protection Compact Act of 2009 which was recently introduced in Congress. The bill is aimed at providing financial support to select countries that have the political will but lack an established public justice system to investigate crimes against children and prosecute the criminals.
IJM has a website (IJM.org) where you can learn more about it’s work, get comprehensive information about the bill, and easily contact your Congressional representative urging them to support the bill. By putting in your name and address, the letter is automatically sent.
San Francisco Food Bank
The San Francisco Food Bank provides fresh, frozen, canned and dried, nonperishable foods to the agencies and organizations that serve the poor and needy, such as after-school care, senior centers, hospices, food distributions in different neighborhoods. You can volunteer individually or with your friends and family as a group. The Food Bank is located on Pennylvania Ave. in Potrero Hill, ample free parking. Volunteers work 3 hour shifts on weekdays, weeknights and weekends. Register to volunteer at www.sffoodbank.org. The Sunset Church contact person is Diana Lee.
